NUMBER 5
WELCOME:

We are pleased to welcome to
Central Church our new associate
minister, the Reverend Alan W.
DeGraw, his wife Marilyn and
their daughters, Julie (8) and
Sharon (5).
Alan comes to us from St. Luke 1 s
United Methodist Church in Essexville near Bay City where he
served three and a half years.
Prior to that he served churches
in Oakgrove and Calumet
Alan was born and raised in Iowa and is a graduate of the University of Iowa and Garrett Theological Seminary. He served for two
years in the U.S. Army between College and Seminary. He S a
rock hound enjoys gardening, jogging and camping. In 1974 Alan
and Marilyn spent ten days in Israel and Greece.

Rev . DeGraw comes to us highly recommended by Bishop Loder and
his cabinet and we know that we shall benefit from his ministry.
As one of the ministers of Central church, feel free to call on
him for weddings, funerals, counselling, etc .
You will want to be present on Sunday to welcome the DeGraws and
to greet them personally at the reception to be held in Fellowship Hall following the 10:45 service.
Rev . Ralph D. Churchill

filan DeGraw
It has been a pri vilege to be a part of the
Detroit Annual Conference for 36 years. It was a
special year in 1964. I married Marilyn Lossing in
March. Bishop Marshall Reed ordained me Deacon
in June. I became an Assistant Pastor at the St.
Stephens United Methodi st Church in Chicago
while attending Garrett-Evangelical Seminary.
Graduating fro m Garrett-Evangelical in 1966,
my first appointment was to Oak Grove and
Cohoctah on the Ann Arbor District. My last
appointment is also at Oak Grove. But in the
meantime Oak Grove merged with two other
congregations to form a strong united congregation
in growing Li vingston County. A new church,
education unit and fe llowship hall was built in
1980. In between Oak Grove appointments I
served the Calumet charge (Calumet, Laurium and
Mohawk-Ahmeek), Essexville: St. Luke's
Waterford Central (Associate), Allen Park, Vassar
and Flat Rock.
On the conference level I served on the board
of Pensions during the ex iting years with John
Buxtom and Harry Pi per when we adopted slogans
such as "color it green" and "sooner is cheaper" in
terms of pay ing extra pension apportionments so
as to pay off indebtedness and full y fund each
year's obligations. I wi ll now receive the benefits
of thi s foresighted action of the Annual
Conference. Thank you, members of the Annual
Conference.
I praise the Lord for the opportunity to serve
on the Board of Outdoor and Retreat Ministry. I

have served as
a counselor or
dean for about
25 weeks thru
the years. Other
ministries I
have been a
part of include
Crop Walks, Hospice and Jail Ministry. Along with
Marilyn I helped lead four overseas trips of the
Detroit Conference choir. I am deeply indebted to
my wife, Mari lyn, who stood by me as a pastor's
wife. and then for 8 years was a pastor also.
Unfortunately Marilyn lost the physical battle with
pancreatic cancer on January 28, 2000. The
highl ight of each day was all the cards and letters
and phone calls from friends, relati ves and
members of the Detroit Annual Conference. Thank
you very much.
I have two daughters, Julie and Sharon. I plan
to live in retirement in the home we had built in
1997 on ten acres of land in the country about 30
minutes northwest of Port Huron. The land has
been in the fam ily for four generations. I will be
open to whatever the Lord has in mind for me to
do next.
You are cordially invi ted to call or stop by:
Arbor Acres. 7015 KiIburn Road, Jeddo, Michigan
48032. Phone: (8 10) 327-0148.

The Rev. Alan DeGraw is
serving full-time in his retirement at the Bay Port and
Hayes
United Methodist
Churches on the Port Huron
District.

MCA: What's going on at
the Bay Port and Hayes
UMCs?
DeGraw: We're averaging
about 45 a Sunday at each
church.
Churches
and clergy in the
area are planning a special
Prayer Time for
Farmers on May
11 at noon, just
becau se it was a
very disastrous
year for the
farmers up h ere
last year. We will
pray for cooperative
weath er
and a good harvest.
MCA: What's new in the
two churches?
DeGraw: We have a confirmation class going on. A lay
person named Marie L eipprandt is doing a lot of the
work.
At Bay Port we h ave the
Blessing of the Fleet, in which
we pray for a few of the fisher
folk around. That's on Sunday,
May 19 .
(Port Huron District Superintendent) Marv McCallum
asked rne to serve on the district board of missions. They
receive m onies from the local
chu rches and provide grants
and loans to church es that
have programs going or a
building project.
I'm a volunteer in sp iritual
care with th e local Hospice
organization.
I'm going to be a camp dean
this summer. It's Great Lakes
D iscovery Camp, based out of
Camp Kinawind. We're at
camp on Monday and Friday.
During the week we go out to
see G od's world, particularly
three Great Lakes.
T he them e of camp is
"Turn Around" and looks at
different p eop le in the Bible
wh o turned their lives around

and gave their lives to following God.
MCA: Tell us about your
new wife.
DeGraw: My wife, Marilyn, passed away in 2000, and I
remarried in June of 2001. M y
wife's m aiden name is Judith
Wagner. She's never been married before. She's also new to
being a minister's wife, so it's
quite an adjustment.
H er brother, Jim,
was in the Oak
Grove UMC, my
previous church.
His wife got into
the matchmaker
mode. Jim had a
single sister.
MCA: What
about the youth
in your churches?
DeGraw: We're
reaching out to the
~-....o1yo uth. In the Bay
Port Church they
haven 't had a youth Sunday
sch ool class, so people got one
started.
We h aven't had a consistent
nursery a t the Hayes UMC.
M y wife, Judy, offered to help
work with that.
We're part of the food
pantry.
Both churches put money in
their budgets for the pro-missional work of the Detroit
Conference. It's part of Ministry Jubilee in which you can
give m oney to the conference
and let them decide where it's
most needed.
MCA: Could you talk
about the inspiration of
Jesus in your ministry?
DeGraw: I feel that God
and Jesus are great people to
work for. God 's able to take
anybody's life and m ake it
m eaningful.
God 's able to h elp us fin d
happiness and fulfillment.
Jesus gave his life for us. We
love because h e first loved us.
It's been great to work with
church people through the
years who are followers of
Christ and to reach out int~
the community.
