I am proud for two reasons. First of al1,13Y1.u':'e
is our son-in-law. He and Jeannine were married
here at Saint James last May. We think that sonsin-law just don'tcome anybeUerthan Bruce. Second,
Bruce is completing his first year at GarreU
Theological Seminary and wi II be ordained deacon
at the Annual Conference to 'be held at Adrian
College next week. Bruce will have two more years
to complete before receiving his Master of Divinity
Degree leading to his elder's ordination and his
appointment as a United Methodist M inister in the
Detroit Conference.
B r uce was a member at Saint Matthews United
Methodist Church in Livonia before transferring
to Saint James prior to the wedding. His parents
had moved to New Jersey, so our home became his home and our church his church. In a sense,
we have gained a minister through marriage and our charge conference has made the necessary
recommendation that Bruce receive his License to Preach and be r eceived into probationary
membership in the conference. I'm sure that you will share our joy and the joy of his parents,
as he takes this very important step. As has been the practice in the past, Bruce will preach
at Saint James the Sunday following ordination, June 10. Our elected lay delegates, Mrs. E Iaine
Phillips and Mr. George Tuttle will also be attending this conference as will Rev . Nusz and I.
While appointments to churches are not finalized until the bishop reads them at the conference,
in all probability both Rev. Nusz and I shall be returning for another year. If this proves to be the
case, we shall both be very happy about it. We love Saint James, and believe in what it is trying
to do; and what it can do in the days ahead. I feel particularly fortunate to have such a capable
and committed friend sharing with me in the ministry. You can be sure that we shall do everything within our ability to make the coming year stimulating and productive. We are intrigued
by the challenges and opportunities before us, and we know that God will do his part.
Saint James has been blessed and is blessed by more than its share of capable and committed
lay people. We are as strong as we are because so many of you are more than willing to go the
second and third m i les in serving and giving. AS WE LOOK AHEAD TO THE COMING CONFERENCE YEAR, LET US PRAY FOR OUR CHURCH AND STRIVE TO MAKE THIS THE BEST
YEAR YET!

My call into the ministry was not accompanied ~Y a flash of
lightning nor a thunderous voice, but rather was a process of
events over a period of years . \v·hen I was in g rade school I
entert'ained thoughts of enterinp:- the ministry, most ly due to
the i nfl uenc-e of the l ocal pastor, J ame s La ng-e . I was ac tive
in the Bunday School program as well as youth fellowship. Eut
durin.g hi~_l1 ~. cho_o_l my v·oc a ti~n a_l pl ans switched to fly:ing a nd
the ~i r Force Academy . Several thing s happened in high school
which once _B:gain turned my thinking towards the ministry. Fi rst ,
an·d nros t ·influentlal was the Christian Club; a g roup of hi gh
school ers who met once a week after school and al so at homes for
B1ble study. We a ls o went to a mis sion house i n downtown Detroit
one night a wee¥ . It was during a . Chri stian Club outing that I
made my decision ror Christ , Howe~r , I still intended to ~-e anAir Force p ilot.

Mini stry, That June the Churchill 's moved to Detro it from Saginaw
and their parsonag-e was just 4 miles fro m my home , I truly ~e liev-e
that God h ad somethin ~ i n mind and J eannine and I dated regularl y
although we went to different high school s. I st ill pl ana-ed to
ent er the .Air Force,
I n th e summe r of '67 I saw a war movie entitled TOBRUK, One of
s c en-es i n the movie dep ict ed t he 1:5om~ing of a v illage and the c·ost
of we.r, in personal terms. I dec·ided that ni ght that I couldn't
square my Christi an convicti ons wi t h ki llihg and war and so I made
a dec~sion to enter th e mi nistry .
I later had doubts about my cal ling duri ng my colleg e years, and
in part duri ng semina ry. There were two experiences in seminary
which I fee l confirmed my calli ng . One was the CPE (Cli nical
Pastoral Education ) prog ram at Lutheran General Hospital in
Des Pla ines, Illinois. The second was my · ~ear as an a ssoci ate
pastor in Crete , Illi nois during my senior year a t G~ETS.

The Reverend Bruce M. Denton was elected to Elder's Orders and
received as a Full Member of the Detroit Annual Conference of the United
Methodis t Church on Wednesday afternoon, June 2nd, as the 135th consecutive session of the Conference began in Dawson Auditorium on the campus
of Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan.
On Wednesday evening, he was ordained an Elder in the United
Methodist Church by Bishop Dwight E. Loder, Resident Bishop of the
M1chigan Area of the United Methodist Church .
Son of Mr . and Mrs. Douglass Denton of Northville, Michigan,
The Reverend Denton was graduated fr om Thurston High School in
Detroit, Michigan. He received an A.B. degree from Adrian Co llege at
Adrian, Michigan, and a M. Div . degr ee from Garrett - Evangelical Seminary
in Evans ton , Illinois in 1975.
Re commended for a License to Preach by the Charge Conference of
St. James United Methodist Church of Detroit, Michigan, The Reverend
was e lected to Deacon's Orders by the Detroit Annual Conference in
1973 , and was received as a Probationary Member in the Detroit Conference in 1973 .
Elder's Orders and Reception into Full Membership
in an Annual Conference are the fina l steps into the Ministry of the
United Methodist church.
