?.?e- results of the 15th ballot,"
announced Bishop Armstrong, presiding over the Wednesday evening session of the North Central Jurisdictional
Conference of The United Methodist
Church. A silent attention came over the
delegations from nine Midwestern states,
a sense of expectant joy gripped each
visitor and delegate from the Michigan
Area, and heartbeats of Jesse and Annamary DeWitt slowed to an almost stop.
"Number of votes cast, 4.73," continued
Bishop Armstrong. "Number defective, 4.
Number counted, 469. Number n ecessary
to elect, 313. The conference has elected
a new bishop; Jesse R. DeWitt with 404
votes is elected!"
Not until the fifteenth bnUot was the conference able to obtain a two-thirds agreement to select from these thr"" h" hi

Bishop Jesse R. DeWitt.
Jesse DeWitt is 54 years old and he spent
all but the last two years serving in the
Detroit Conference. He has been the pastor
of the Winnebago-Seward Charge, Aldersgate Church in Detroit, and Faith Church
in Oak P ark. He served on the Detroit
Conference staff as executive secretary of
the Board of Missions and Church Extension ; was superintendent of the Detroit
West District for three years; and for the
last two years was in New York City on
the staff of Global Ministries. He received
his education from Wayne State University and Garrett Th eological Seminary.
The Detroit Conference delegation worked
vigorously for his election from the casting
of the first ballot to the last; and the West
Michigan delegates joined in his support as
well.
Upon the climatic announcement of Dr.
DeWitt's election to the episcopacy, Bishop
Loder (left) had the honor of presenting
him to the delegates of the conference.
