s uc h as aBuild i ng Program, an Evangelistic Cru s ade, an exceptiona l Class
of New Membe r s , some bit of community serv ice, etc.

One of my goals in this community, apart from my re gul ar pastoral work, is
to develop a spirit of cooper ation among the ministers i n t he area of the
various de nominations . Out of t his was bor n a Community Census which I
directed . Over 200 people partic ipated t o make a r e ligious census of t he
c ommunity. ne , as a group , have gone on t o community service s a nd other
c ommunity projects . It is my personal hope that though the cooperation
of the churches, the c ommu nity a s a whole will be uhified and ma ny of the
deve lopmental growing pains in t he c ommunity hea led . The only ot her item
of a ny consequence is the c ooperPtion with the schools, the Probat e Court
to organize a Youth Protection Association . The purpose of the group is
to seek out children
C L I P P I N G S who are disturbed because of
(about you personal ly or your mi nistry)
personal or f amily probl ems a nd give them help be fore these problems manif e st themselves in breaking t he l aw . This program has been very successful in Haze l Park, Mich ., and we have like hopes it will r ender a real s er vice to t he young people in our community .

Earl and Gloria Down ing,
42 years; honorable location:
Earl, whose home church was
Ford Memorial in Detroit, recalled deaconess Marybelle Stewart,
who inspired him to do youth ministry. Downing has worked as a
social worker to "help heal young
lives and young families that have
been badly hurt." He expressed
regret that he was unable to find
a position as a church social
worker. However, he said , "God
has been good to me, blessing
me with ministry and marriage."
He concluded his remarks with
advice given him by a high school
speech teacher: "To be seen,
stand up; to be heard, speak up;
to be appreciated, sit down."
Gloria added, "As we are last, I
will get the last word. 'Amen' to all
that has been said about Christian ministry." "'/01-1)93
