~ Dr. Duttdn in Hospital
F
-.:.
R O~[
St. Mary's Hospital comes this
letter by the hand of 1liss Helen
Dutton, dictated by her father, Rev.
Joseph Dutton :
"On Sunday, June 22, I was to have
preached the baccalaureate sermon for
Teachers College, Marquette. But in lieu
of that I was lying in a hospital bed in
Marquette, swinging fifty-fiity between
Marquette and Heaven with the chances
all in favor of the latter. Peter Stair's
<~ppendi x of year s ago I could smi le at,
but this one of mine was busted. All day
Sunday I could have thanked any kindly
hand that would have carried me out and
soak ed me in Lake Superior. This is
Thursday morning, June 26, I have arrived as far as beef broth, I have been
packed in icc, scalded with hot bags.
pricked with all the kinds o f needles
known, and had the strange new sen~a
tion of having sever al pints of salt solution pierced into the tissue.
"The things they didn't do to me are
less in number than the things they did.
I am in th e guest chamber of St. Mary's
Hospital, surrounded by sacred art, with
two special nurses. I have the daily ministration of two fine priests and the kindly
communication of forty loyal northland
Methodist preachers.
"Twenty years ago I formed a friendship with 'A Great Good Grey Physician.'
Love wins again. I knew this man would
dry up Lake Superior to save me. There
is considerable of the old lake left, but
I am here. I suppose soup will he on in
a few days.
"Michigamme is coming fine. Some of
the older ministers will help me with my
fourth quarterly conferences. Life is a
great game; we are playing to win.
" ] oseph Dutton.
"P. S.·-Rev. Fred ]. Clifford of First
church, Marquette, was called upon at
short notice to preach the baccalaureate
sermon noted above, and acquitted himself with great credit."

T DID not seem. appropriate t~ say
anything about 1t m advance, but
the wife of the Superintendent of the
Ann Arbor District knew it was approaching, and the wives of ministers _on
the district comm issioned her to proVlde
a gorgeous potted plant of golden
chrysanthemums; the bowl itself had
hea'ry golden wrapping. Two of our
children who Jived not too far away,
visited Dad and Mother the day before;
the other children wrote out of the
abundance of their Jove, and m ade the
old man's heart glad.
Then on the proper day somebody
bough t a ym·d of gold ribbon and gave
it to one of the nurses, and instantly
the idea f lowered into action. The head
nurse said, "You stay here in the office,
Mr. Dutton, we'll fix her up." So they
got "Bill," the big Negro orderly, to
lift mother out of b ed and place her
gently in a lounging chair. Bill is accustomed to this; he pats her cheek, and
gets a radiant smile in return; wife has
not been able to speak for many weeks.
Then they announced to me, "Now, you
can go in!" I found one of the nurses
feeding her with a spoon and a glass
dropper. She can take only liquid foods,
soups, cream, icc cream, grape juice,
vitamins, etc. The senior 11urse brought
me a pot of tea; and together, in the
presence of a roomful of nurses, wife
m1d I had all we desired of all the
things suitable for the occasion.
I noticed what they had done with
the ribbon; it h ad been wound into
h er freshly-braided hair, and looked
gorgeous. Another nurse (young, and
pretty) put a small golden chrysanthemum in my button-hole.
Our k indly fami ly doctor paused at
t he door fo r a :f'e w moments in his
daily rounds, and evidently surmising
that temperature and blood-pr essure
were satisfactory today, smiled and
passed on. Past the bedroom door
Sister Gaulbe1·ta in spotless flowing
white robes f li tted by; and I fancied
I heard the f lutter of an angel's wing.
Several verses of Scripture came to
mind, such as the words of Jesus,
"Greater works than these shall ye do,
because I go unto my F ather:" And in
the book of Revelation (if I quote correctly). "And there shall be no more
hardening of the arteries; and sweet
·m emories of the Golden Years shall not
fade; and God shall wipe away a ll t ear s
from their eyes; and night shall b e no
more ; they need no light of lamp or
s un, for the lord God sha ll be their light,
and they shall reign fo r ever and ever."
"Bill" lifted mother back into bed, for
she was soon tired, and her head began
to droop; th e nurses tucked her in, and
went away for other duties, and I
