William E. Frayer
AUTOBIOGRAPHY: I was born January 5, 1926,
in northwest Detroit ncar old Nardin Park
Methodist Church . My parents were Rudolph
and Anna Frayer and my family life was
enriched by brother Don and sister Dorothy.

After high sc hoo l, I spent several years in the
U.S. Navy, in the Pacific, on an amphibious
landing ship. Some of my naval experien ces
had a d eep influence . as we worked carr ying
s upplies to desolate parts of Korea and then
600 miles into Chi na on the Yangtze Rive r. At
that time there was a gre<~ t famine with an
es timated 6 million who starved to death.
Soon a fter WWII, Shirley Hesse and I began to
co u rt after both growing up in Westlawn
Methodist under Dr. Ben Holme, who was of
tremendous influence on our lives. After a
Va lentine wedding in 1948 we bega n a family
w ith a son, Richard, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Susan and Cheryl.
Afte r severa l years wi th our own app liance business in Redford Township, we
attended th e o rganizing worsh ip of Lola Valley Methodist. Act ive in the new church ,
I attended Annual Conference and a very moving "call" from Bishop Marsha ll Reed
led me to close the business and take appointment at Stony C reek in 1956.
While serv ing Stony Creek I attended Adrian College for two yea rs and finished at
Eastern Michigan University. During thi s time the church chose a new site and built a
new chu rc h building. At that time I suffe red a seve re heart attack which was to affect
my future. On ly b y the strength and g reat fai th of Shirley and family and c hurch was I
able to carr y on. In 1967 I received the Master of Divinity and was ordai ned Elder at
Adrian under Bishop Dwight Loder. The years took us to serve Stockbridge, Dix,
Lincoln Park, Associate at Nardin Park a nd a sho rt stay at Birmingham Embu ry. Then
a fail ing heart forced me to take disability in 1982.
We were ri chly blessed over 24 years to serve ch urches with kind , thoughtfu l, helpful
people. Life has been very ri c h in our mini stry and we can never thank the Church
and o ur God enough.
1 have been very fortunat e to have seemingly nine lives. For over the years, each time
the heart w.Js about to fail, new su rgeries, medications, or procedures Jdded more
ye<~rs.

1 wi ll ;~I ways be in debt to the Detroit Conference a nd brothers Jnd sisters in ministry
w ho prep<~red the health a nd disability plans that provided quality care in dark
hours.

Now with new research medication and improving health I look forward to
worshiping and being of some sma ll service at Nardin Park fo r many ye<~rs to come.

TESTIMONIAL: What goes around docs come a round .. Bill Frayer and myself arc

cases in point. We grew up in the same neighborhood, attended the sa me church,
.Jnswe red the sa me Lord and, fo r th e last decade, have toiled in the s.J me vineyard.
Scratch either of us deeply and you will find the imprint of Ben Ho lme and the
people o f WestiJwn Church. It WJS J good beginning.
Wh ile not necessa rily avoiding Nineveh. l3ill initia ll y skirted tne mini stry by sailing

organiLC a c hurch in Lo l,t V.JIIey, God di srupted his C01:1 fo rt for something far m o re
difficult, yet more in keeping with Bil l's true talents.
Not that it wo uld ever be easy again. For while God's love never iailed and !Jill's
t.Jients never waned, health was Jnothcr ma tte r. l3ill"s heart, which has never lacked
for love. h.1 s often lacked for blood. More than once it rose up to att..tck hi m. [a c h
time he b;~ttled back, thanb to good card iolog y and a gracious God. No str.Jngcr to
s urgery or pharma co logy. he has known wha t it is to serve with ··a thorn in the
flesh.··
Not tha t there h,l•Jen·t been successes. Just as k the folk of Stoney Creek.
Stockbridge, Lin coln I'.Hk (Dix) and N.trdin Park. Everywhere they h.tvc been. Bill
and Shirl ey have made friends for a lifetime and friends fo r the Lord. Never loa) 13ill
fail ed to leave a church better than he found it. At Linco ln Park he lit a fi re under the
congregation. His wJs not the fire that burne<.l th e c hurc h to the ground. His was the
fir e th,Jt rebuilt it from the ground up.
In 13ill Frayer people foun d

a man of helpful sermons, reflec ting a workman ·s knowledge o f the Bible and a
pastor's knowledge of his people.

,, man wi th a businessman's eye fo r d e tail a nd J me\h.Jnic's sense of the c hurch as
a well-oiled m.tchine.

J man who co uld usc the ve h icle of a study group to make Christ real, especiall y
to the g rievin g and the searching.

a man o f visitation, who knew that the world was never saved from behind a d esk
and that the real frontier of faith was often in somebody's li ving room.

a man of ethics, who rellectcd the ax iom th.lt it didn·t matter how high you
jumped on th e night you met Jesus , but how strai g ht you walked the morning
after.

a man of empathy. whose own journey through the v.J IIcy en.Jblcd him to walk
with o th ers similarly afflicted.

a man of p rayer, whose private journey was d evotionall y-rooted and who)e
publ ic prayer s ad dressed God majestically in a voice that many thou g ht
resembled that of the Almighty speaking.

Fift een years ago, it was suggested that joining .J lo1rge ch urch staff might le ng the n
Uill's life. While many would chall enge th at assumption, it led to a wonderful
mJrriJge between Bill Fraye r ,1nd Nardin Park. Arriving to p lay P.u1Cho to Uill
Mercer's Don Quixote. 13ill has remained to support and serve with me. It hils been J
g ift recei ved with affection Jnd enjoyed to thi s day. I rejoice in it s cont inuJnce.
Ret irement aside, NJrdin Park nee<h 13ill. Thank God, the feeling ap)Jears to be
