Bishop Charles W. Brashares

Retired Bishop Charles W. Brashares, 91, died in Evanston, Illinois, June 23, 1982 after several weeks of failing health. A native of Williamsport, Ohio, he felt called to the ministry and prepared himself with graduate study both at Boston and Harvard University. He was ordained an elder in the M.E. Church in 1918.

Dr. Brashares held pastorates in Massachusetts, Maine, Ohio, and Michigan. The following were his appointments: 1917, Boston - Orient Heights; 1918, Gorham, Me.; 1920, Newton; 1922, W. Ohio, Dayton - Grace; 1934, Detroit, Ann Arbor First. For ten years he was an inspiring preacher to townspeople and university students in Ann Arbor; he was director of the Wesley Foundation and taught a Bible class for students. He was a joyous troubadour for God. He wrote a number of articles for the Michigan Christian Advocate. He began one article in this way: "I like God. I'm glad I do. Some people don't."

In 1944 Dr. Brashares was elected bishop. He served eight years as the episcopal leader of Iowa Methodism, and then 12 years in Chicago, before retiring in 1964. He made his home in Ann Arbor for a time, and then settled in Evanston, Ill., where he was active in First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Brashares died in 1974. Survivors include three sons, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The memorial service was held June 30 at the Church in Evanston; burial was in Ann Arbor.
