Rev. A.T. Cartland, 97, oldest United Methodist minister in Michigan and a member of the West Michigan Conference, died April 24 at Clark Memorial Home, Grand Rapids, where he had lived the last 16 years. Mr. Cartland was holder of the Conference Cane. Albert Thompson Cartland was born at Pascagoula, Miss., on April 5, 1874, the son of Samuel A. and Emma Hannahs Cartland. He attended schools in Charlotte and Lansing, Michigan, and graduated from the former Michigan Agricultural College with post-graduate work at Allegheny College. He was married to Edith Coffman in 1898 and she was his stong aide for over 58 years. After her death he was married to Libby Cowan in 1958. He had varied experiences. At one time he spent four years homesteading in Alberta, Canada; taught school for four years; and was a full-time minister for thirty-six years serving the following parishes: Danby, Wacousta, Cassopolis, (Whitebrush Circuit in Alberta), Bath, Fremont, Dowagiac, Manistee, Stockbridge Avenue and Milwood in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek Upton Avenue, Carson City, Lowell, Lake Odessa, Rockford, and Climax. Mr. Cartland retired in 1939. He was the father of four sons, Fred of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. George of Kalamazoo, Robert of Augusta, and John of Holland; and one daughter, Mrs. L.H. Walkinshaw of Battle Creek. Memorial services were held April 27 at Clark Home with Rev. Park Newcombe in charge, assisted by Dr. Carlos Page, Grand Rapids District superintendent, and Rev. Howard Fuller. Burial was in the family lot in Augusta.
