David Casler

David Casler was born February 3rd, 1840, at Minden, New York, his parents being devout, God-fearing people. He was converted at the age of seventeen and received his education at Cazenovia Seminary, New York, where after being licensed to preach, he began his ministry. Feeling the need of further preparation, at the age of twenty-five he proceeded to Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., from which he received his post-graduate degree.

He was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Maria Lincoln and soon after, in the year 1869, came to Michigan where he was received into the Detroit Conference. Here he served charges in the following places: Chelsea, East Saginaw, Monroe, Detroit, Oxford, Flushing, Holly and Vernon, Norway, Sault Ste. Marie, Donaldson, Manistique, Ishpeming, Osceola and Calumet. Together with this he served four years as District Superintendent in Marquette District.

Converted in "that year of wonderful revivals," to use his own words, at the time of the great Dwight L. Moody awakening, the spiritual glow of that period gave this stalwart warrior an evangelistic fervor which reflected the glowing experience of his youth, and often charged his preaching with an almost irresistible power.

His retirement came in 1906 when he made his home in his remaining years in Sault Ste. Marie. Here Mrs. Casler preceded him in death in 1908 and a daughter, Lizzie, followed in 1916. He was a man of strong, rugged personality, a gallant Christian gentleman, with a burning heart, tempered by divine grace, and he lived for one purpose, the coming of the kingdom of God.

Within four weeks of his eighty-ninth birthday, his triumphant spirit passed home to a well-earned reward at the home of his son, Dr. Wilbur Casler in Marquette, on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 17th, 1929. He is survived by four children, three sons and one daughter as follows: Howard of Flint; Miss Mary of Sault Ste. Marie; Wilbur L. of Marquette; and Walter of Duluth, together with several grandchildren.

On Monday, Jan. 21st following a brief service at the home of Dr. Casler, the casket was conveyed to the First Methodist church, Marquette for another service, in which ten of his Conference brothers participated, his pastor giving the address. The remains were laid to rest in Park Cemetery, Marquette.
