August H. Coors

August H. Coors was born in White River Township on July 7, 1860, and died February 22, 1955 at Clark Memorial Home, Grand Rapids.

At the age of 14 he left the farm to work in saw mills and in printing offices in Monatague and in Chicago, finally enrolling in German-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, where he studied for the ministry. Returning to Michigan, on December 14, 1887 he was married to Julia Marie Duttenhoffer, of Whitehall, who preceded him in death in January, 1945.

For 37 years Brother Coors served churches at Gladwin, Pentwater, Clare, Vicksburg, Hart, Sparta, Shelby, Bellevue, Bath and Whitehall. He retired in 1925 to make his home at Whitehall. For the last five months of his life he lived at Clark Home, Grand Rapids.

Funeral services were held at Whitehall on Saturday, February 26. Rev. August Klaiber, gave a personal tribute; Dr. William H. Helrigel, superintendent of the Albion-Lansing District, spoke on behalf of the Michigan Conference; Bishop Marshall Reed gave the message; Rev. Harold Arman, pastor at Whitehall, read the scripture; Rev. Richard C. Miles, superintendent of the Kalamazoo District, offered prayer; and Rev. Floyd N. Drake, superintendent of the Clark Home, pronounced the benediction.

He is survived by his son, Bishop D. Stanley Coors, and two daughters, Mrs. Dana Snell, of Lansing, Mrs. B.F. Land, of Columbus, Ohio, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was an avid reader of history and literature, and his kindliness and cheerful inspiration won him high regard wherever he served. Also a great lover of music, he asked that the congregation at his funeral sing "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "In the Cross of Christ I Glory," and "O Could I Speak the Matchless World."
