Harley L. Lane

The Reverend Harley L. Lane, 95, oldest living clergy member of the West Michigan Conference, died on January 2, 1991 at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian, Michigan after a brief illness. He had been living at the Deck Foster Care Home, Hudson, since 1987. He was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Lane on October 13, 1895 near Jerome, Somerset Township, Hillsdale County. A younger sister, Irene, predeceased him by ten years. Neither one had married.

Growing up in the Jerome area, he attended the Jerome School and later was employed there as a janitor and as a teacher. In 1935, Reverend Lane entered the Methodist ministry as an Approved Supply Pastor and was first appointed as pastor to the Climax United Methodist Church. He also served at Winn United Methodist Church, and then at Ashton United Methodist Church. He retired from Ashton in 1957.

Reverend Lane took up residence in Jerome and for many years was caregiver to his mother until her death in 1969. His father had died in 1939.

He lived a quiet life and was well known in Jerome. In June 1989, he was awarded the traditional "Conference Cane." Increasing age limited his mobility and his health had been generally good. He is survived by one niece, Miss Della Green of Hillsdale, Michigan.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 5, 1991 in the Jerome United Methodist Church with the Reverend Melanie Baker-Streevy officiating.
