Bishop Dwight E. Loder
Bishop Dwight E. Loder was born July 8, 1914 in Waverly, Nebraska. He received a BA degree from the University of Nebraska and a theology degree from Boston University. He also studied law at the University of Nebraska and received numerous honorary doctorates in his lifetime. He married Mildred E. Shay of Stoneham, Massachusetts on September 17, 1937. She preceded him in death on November 26, 1999.
Bishop Loder served churches in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. He was pastor at Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church in Minneapolis when he was selected to be President of Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. He was elected Bishop in 1964 and served the Michigan area from 1964-1976 and the Ohio West area from 1976 until retirement in 1984. Bishop Loder interrupted his retirement to serve as Acting President of the Methodist Theological School in Ohio in 1985-86. He also served as trustee of several colleges and other institutions. He attended the World Methodist Conference in 1961, 1966, 1971 and 1976.
He died November 9, 2002, at his home in Worthington, Ohio at age 88. He is survived by three children: Ruth Ann Burnecke, William Loder, and David Loder; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held November 15, 2002, at First United Methodist Church, Worthington, Ohio.
