Bishop Thomas Nicholson
Bishop Thomas Nicholson was born at Woodbury, Ontario, January 27, 1862. Prepared in Toronto Normal School, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1892, and in Garrett Biblical Institute the same year. He had already joined the Michigan Conference in 1884, where he served several charges during and after his student years. He was professor of philosophy and Biblical literature at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, from 1894 to 1903. He became President of Dakota Wesleyan University in 1903 where he served until 1908, when he was elected Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Education, at Baltimore, Maryland. He was elected General Superintendent at Saratoga Springs in 1916. Immediately assigned to the Chicago Area, he served there until 1924, when he became resident Bishop at Detroit.
Bishop Nicholson has occupied many important positions in the Church, such as presidency of the Board of Sunday Schools, of the Board of Hospitals, Homes and Deaconess Work, and executive membership in many other connectional societies. He has been President of the Anti-Saloon League of America since 1921. Teacher, preacher, lecturer and leader, he stands high in the history of Methodist Episcopacy.
