J.T.M. Stephens
Rev. J.T.M. Stephens died at his home in Dearborn, March 31, 1960. He was born January 3, 1870, at Rockaway, N.J., and later his family moved to West Fairlee, Vermont.
He attended the Academy at Thetford Hill and Montpelier Methodist Seminary in Vermont and Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Ill. After serving churches in Vermont and Montana from 1893 to 1900 he was transferred to the Detroit Conference where he served until his retirement in 1937. Later he was appointed to the London and Mooreville charge for one year and five years at VanBorn Community Church, Dearborn, which has been named the Stephens Methodist Church in his honor.
During his ministry in the Detroit Conference he served in the Treasurer's office for five years, five years on the Bureau of Transportation and on several committees and served the following churches: Kearsage, Atlantic Mine, Bancroft, Holly, Durand, Fenton, Algonac, Caro, Brown City, Port Huron, Detroit and Owosso.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis, of Dearborn; two sons, James H. and Richard T. of San Francisco, California; one granddaughter, and three great-grandsons.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 3, at the Stephens Methodist Church with Rev. James Weiss in charge. He was assisted by Rev. Willis F. Holmgren, pastor of the Covenant Evangelical Church and Rev. Edward H. Wilcox, a long-time friend of the family, preached the sermon. Burial was in the Northview Cemetery, Dearborn.
