Richard Daniel Wearne
The Reverend Richard D. Wearne, age 98, passed away at M.J. Clark Memorial Home on February 13, 1989. He was the holder of the Conference Cane as the oldest living clergy member in the West Michigan Conference. Richard was born on November 8, 1890 at Ishpeming, Michigan. He graduated from Allegan High School, and Albion College class of 1914. He took additional work at Garrett Biblical Institute. On June 18, 1914 he married the former Abbie C. Fuller at Springport, Michigan. He was ordained Elder in 1918.
Richard served the following churches: Glen-Casco, Battle Creek Urbandale, Burr Oak, Center-Eaton Group Charlotte Parish, Rockford, Berrien Springs, Kalamazoo Damon-Comstock, Kalamazoo Stockbridge, and Grand Ledge. He was District Superintendent of the Kalamazoo District from 1947 to 1953. He retired from the active parish ministry in 1959. They resided in Kalamazoo, and after a few years took residence in Clark Home where they lived from almost 20 years.
Richard's wife, Abbie, preceded him in death as did a son, Richard L. Wearne, who was a Navy aviator. One son survives, Robert V. Wearne of Clarendon, Illinois, as do three grandsons and three great-granddaughters.. Funeral services were held at M.J. Clark Memorial Home on February 18, 1989, with District Superintendent Ellen Brubaker, Chaplain Kenneth Kline, Dr. Charles Fry, and Rev. Emerson Minor officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan, Michigan.
Richard was a dearly loved member of the West Michigan Conference. He was a quiet man but could be firm when the occasion required. For over 45 years he gave complete dedication to the service of his Lord and the Church.
